Relay for Life

This morning I woke up at 4:15 am to go participate in Relay for Life. Last year, I got stuck walking the 4am shift, but this year I actually really enjoyed it. It rained a lot overnight, so most of the campsites were empty, and there were literally 4 other people walking while I was there. A little depressing. But I had my own personal triumph while out on the Normal West Community High School track. As some of you may know, I am training to run in my first 5K in September. And as most of you may know, being happily married has not done wonders for my physical fitness. But this morning I ran a mile for the first time since 8th grade! I won't mention that I got lapped by a 45 year old man...

A couple things I noticed while I was driving there this morning:

1) It hits you that you're old when you're driving with the windows down listening to a Michael Buble cd and the bass from this Canadian crooner's song rattles the back windows of your minivan. There are so many things wrong with that statement.

2)Even though you think you'd much rather sleep, you can't help but smile when your 3 year old yells "SURPRISE!" at 6am. Every morning. Without fail.

3) As you parents know, it takes a lot of praise and encouragement to potty train a toddler. But I never thought as an adult I'd hear "Yay Mommy! You went poopy in the potty! I'm so proud of you!" Oh how the tables have turned.

I never thought I would have a 3 year old bust down the door and not notice the stench that my wife can smell down the hall just so he can praise my pooping in the potty. I also never thought the word poopy would be part of my everyday vocabulary.

I did relay with the bank I work for. We had a team. The Commerce Bank team "Banking on a Cure". Jealous much?

Great job! Potty, poop, poopy and toot are without a doubt at the top of our "words used on a regular basis" list. I don't know why, but I giggle to myself everytime I hear Dave ask McKenna, "Do you need to go potty?".

Isn't parenting fantastic?

Shenanigans. You totally did that in high school- just not Michael Buble, it was more of musicals.
